What is a Soul Contract?

And why are contracts important for soul growth?

I first learned what a soul contract was in the winter of 2020. I was tearfully on a FaceTime session with an incredibly gifted psychic, who was later to become my mentor. I’d connected with her in the hopes of clarifying a set of repeating questions that rang through my head in the weeks following the breakup of my thirteen-year relationship with my last husband.

The questions, “How do I know him? Why is this all so familiar?” Continually rotated around my consciousness as the days rolled on. I was actively seeking higher guidance as to the nature of our relationship and why it felt as if I had experienced this exact same scenario before.

As she listened to my recurring questions, she interrupted with “It’s a soul contract.” My tears suddenly stopped as I focused on her face and started inquiring further. “What do you mean, it’s a soul contract? What is that? Do you mean I voluntarily agreed to be in a relationship with this man? Why would I do that to myself?”

She went on to explain several lifetimes I’d experienced with my husband and how we agreed to meet up again in this life in order for me to show him what unconditional love looked like. She further explained that my end of the contract had been fulfilled years ago. I sat for a moment, stunned. Then proceeded with my day contemplating the idea that I had entered into a soul contract with anyone.

It took some time for me to integrate the information I received that day. As time went on however, I began to take a closer look at all the relationships I’d had in my life up to that point. Over the next two years I would learn of other soul contracts I’d entered as well as many more I had yet to experience. You may be asking, why do we make soul contracts with others? When are they made? And what purpose do they serve? To answer this question, I have to go back to how souls make their plans. When a soul is in what we call “heaven” or the dimension souls return to in-between incarnations, they send out thought forms as to what they want to experience in their next incarnation (whether that be on Earth or another planet). The soul’s Spirit Guide picks up on those thought forms and eventually brings the soul to a location where certain incarnation opportunities are presented. The soul will review the opportunities offered and decide as to “who” they want to be in their next life for the sake of receiving the experiences they desire.

After that decision has been made, a formal “blueprint” is created by the soul as to how the life will unfold. Every detail is covered during this meeting between the soul and its family members and friends (other souls that attend the meeting to enter into agreements together). Each one of the souls that attend the meeting either agree to show the primary soul something they are looking to experience, or they agree to show each other certain lessons to learn.

For instance, in the meeting I attended with my ex-husband, he was looking for someone to show him unconditional love. He’d missed the chance to perceive and recognize unconditional love in his prior (or parallel) lifetimes and was looking for another opportunity to realize this experience. I attended the meeting, raised my hand and entered the contract. As a byproduct of our time together, he in turn, showed me how to be strong and stand up for myself. I’d fulfilled the contract, however the end of the relationship was messy and heartbreaking.

Soul contracts are not meant to be painful, but many times can be a struggle, as each soul is trying their best to move through an experience needed for soul growth and ascension. However, each soul does not always receive the guidance intended and the whole lesson may pass them by.

Ultimately, the meaning and purpose behind a soul contract is for individuals to provide opportunities for each other to learn and grow by assisting one another through mirroring behaviors. All with the hopes of eliciting a response that will provide the desired result. We enter soul contracts with many of our family members, friends and even work relationships to show each other important learning opportunities. It is not always done on a reciprocal basis, but most times each soul comes out of the interchange having learned something from the other.

What relationships do you believe were/are soul contracts? Remember, they don’t have to be long or even deep relationships to be a contract facilitating growth!
